Visual timer effects are needed. So easy to program. Tons of possibilities. If I am playing while my wife is sleeping, I have the sound off. I am so focused on the board that I do not notice the timer. Just do something visual, such as a solid line around my half of the board when I get to “x” seconds (that number is user-configurable), when it gets down to “y” seconds the solid line blinks (again, user can configure the number of seconds), when it gets to “z” seconds, the blinking line loses parts of itself until the timer hits “0”. Or, any of other visual clues to the timer would be possible.
