The Strangest Material Imbalance I’ve Seen In a While

Very interesting article with excellent commentary! Even a relatively weak player like me could understand what was going on after you explained it. Positions like this are very interesting, and if anyone reading this wishes they could play with more weird imbalances like this I would recommend the variants Horde and Racing Kings.

  1. d4 Nf6 2. Nc3 g6 3. e4 d6 4. Bc4 Bg7 5. Qe2 Nc6 6. e5 Nxd4 7. exf6 Nxe2 8. fxg7 Rg8 9. Ngxe2 Rxg7 10. Bh6 Rg8 11. h4

This line I've gotten many times online and classical. Amazing 3P vs Q line as white.

There's a beautiful sequence if 47. gxh3 or 47. g3.

Black plays Bd5+ Bc5+ Bd4+ fork, Qxd4 Ne3+ fork again, and white loses the queen.

It seems very natural for three minor pieces to beat a queen+pawn. The only chance for the queen is a blunder or a pawn promotion or perpetual as three pieces always have more attacks at the same point. Even two pieces can level the queen in endgame.

Nice blog! 3 pieces for a queen is usually good if the position is solid like that. The queen lacks targets as you annotated which gives white almost no chances for a win. Also a GM up 3 minutes in a rapid game vs a regular player is easy. I think a more fair comparison is 2 pieces plus a few pawns against a queen in an endgame or rook+bishop.
