Oh dear this took way longer than I imagined, haha.
Anyways, just for some schadefreude, here's a list of my recent games on chess dot com, with my beautiful sequence of losses.

(keeping in mind I'm actually 700 points underrated there, lol , and i was actually trying to win).

Some other minor differences consist of chess-dot-com charging 0.1s for premoves, whilst lichess gives them for free, 0.00s. I guess it fits the websites philosophy.
Ha ha! Loved the blog. Keep it up!
Also, from now one the exclamation "Time Travelling Typo!" is in my vocabulary to convey the same thing, but better, as "Great Scott!"

Amazingly well researched and explained. Thank you.

I really enjoyed reading that! Very detailed and exceedingly hilarious. Would’ve been funnier if you had actually discovered time travel though...

Just realized I forgot to mention another pretty simple theory: chess-dot-com servers take longer to process moves. Like, my ping for lichess is 80ms and for chess-dot-com it is 100ms, perhaps for other people this difference is even larger, without distance being the underlying cause.
I'm not an expert though. I don't know exactly how these things work.
Also, this should be pretty easy to test, if only I had 10.000 volunteers all across the world. Too bad I have none.

In case you ever need one for any other of your crazy ideas, you can count with me.

Ah thanks, I'll keep it in mind. I haven't really planned anything though.

I feel like the study is incomplete if you don't take into consideration mobile devices. Tablets and mobile phones run the game troght applications (not directly troght Web sites) this could create differences, also mobile connection is mach different from the home connection you use on your pc. Hope these notes can inspire you in chasing once again the mistery. Try to inspect the interaction between pc and a mobile device, this must be the real problem.
Best of luck :)

Would ad-blockers make a difference? Or does chess.corp block Ublock Origin?
How are the ads, are they tailored to the user, or to the piece you are moving? "Feel like a KING at NYC Hilton!" "Open a deposit at CryptoCrimes.com where WE do the ROOKING" "Two Dudes and a Truck can help you make your NEXT MOVE,"
