You were probably just clicking through the tournament placings when your new game started. It sometimes happens that you stay on the tournament page then but a big banner should pop up saying that there is a game in progress. And yes, if you fail to start a game you are automatically paused. I believe you can just join pretty quick again.

In this tournament, I wanted to get closer to the leaders and stayed on the tournament page, waiting for the start of a new game, which usually starts 1-30 seconds after the previous one ends. I noticed 0 after 5 and immediately paused.
