Top Tier blog post. And another piece of evidence why ad-free websites are better and browsing the web without adblockers is a bad idea.

This was good reading cos I've been wondering why I play horrible chess in Duolingo (it feels quite laggy). So it probably punishes me for being a European :D

Hmmm few things I have noticed on lichess. Lag comp is amazing on this site until the scrambles. Where it becomes seemingly arbitrary. When one person has a significant time adv, significant material adv, and is premoving. There should be no world, where they lose on time. However, this happens often on this site. So I would suggest that you guys look into that part of lag comp.
My instincts are telling me that it has something to do with how moves are registered. If someone has lag comp and they premove, their premove is seemingly prioritized. As a result, when you make a premove, your premove is canceled. And as a result, not only is it not registered, you are dinged on the lag comp. So I pay for the time my opponent saved with the lag comp.
Hovering is also useless in this setting because of a similar reason. So until that is dealt with, I do not see how lag comp is actually fair in fast time controls.

I feel like the study is incomplete if you don't take into consideration mobile devices. Tablets and mobile phones run the game troght applications (not directly troght Web sites) this could create differences, also mobile connection is mach different from the home connection you use on your pc. Hope these notes can inspire you in chasing once again the mistery. Try to inspect the interaction between pc and a mobile device, this must be the real problem.
Best of luck :)
Yea fair. I don't play on mobile devices, so I have no idea.
I guess research typically generated more questions than it answers. Which is good.

Would ad-blockers make a difference? Or does chess.corp block Ublock Origin?
How are the ads, are they tailored to the user, or to the piece you are moving? "Feel like a KING at NYC Hilton!" "Open a deposit at CryptoCrimes.com where WE do the ROOKING" "Two Dudes and a Truck can help you make your NEXT MOVE,"
I don't know how these things work internally. If they stop ads from loading altogether, then maybe.
My ads were pretty innocent. Pretty general too.

Interesting. I haven't really noticed these type of things.
For me, the geographical location of the opponent is by far the main factor that determines how lag comp influences the game. All other effects are difficult to distinguish because of that. Like, 50ms or 250ms ping completely changes how a time scramble goes.
