Need some genuine tips to cross the 2300 barrier

I have been playing chess for over an year now and been enjoying it immensely but at 2100 rapid, i am at a standstill, i keep teetering off to 2000s once in a while but on a good day i beat 2200s conistently. I just wanted to know what i should focus on to improve.

I am relatively confident that the following method has a good chance of helping somebody to break the 2300 barrier. I share it with the public only because I find chess players to be generally good people, worth helping.

Here's the two-step method:

  1. Get to 2299 elo;

  2. Then study really, really hard, for as long as it takes to rise by two points. Two points is not much. Be confident and don't get discouraged.

And never, ever slap a kindly stranger with a horsey on LiChess.

I would recommend two things (aside from not caring too much about rating) :
Take it one step at a time: Be it one game at a time or one rating step of over 100 points at a time - if you take your time, you can focus more, learn more, practice more and improve more.
Have a whole lot of fun and don't give up (not in the sense of don't resign . resign, whenever you deem your position hopeless in any aspect or you simply don't want to push wood, that leads to nothing).
Other than that, I think the usual things apply (analysis, puzzles, tactics, plans, ideas, concepts, game-phase preparation like knowing your Openings, the structutres of your middlegames and your Endgames, creating attacks and counterattacks, being able to defend, king.safety, active pieces, etc.), but: I never reached 2300 imaginary points...

As someone who is 2276 peak (2258 now) at one-minute, and am on my way through 2300 (was 1500 in 2015), I'm going through all 3,001 positions of ECM/ECC5, which I loaded into Stockfish. I'm currently on position #600 and while it's painful to do this type of studying, the pattern-recognition skills are likely to take me anywhere from 2500-2900 once I'm done. I could also have accomplished this by strengthening my opening repertoire but I want that 3000+ middlegame that lets me find tactics like the machines.

Also if you don't change your repertoire you'll weaponize it increasingly, play it faster, and your rating will go up. If you have recently changed your repertoire, expect an initial dip.

Forgot one other thing: stop hanging stuff.

  • Find out your strong and weak points, so you can either avoid weak points in your games, while you work on them, and so that you can profit from your strong points (For example, I am pretty good with some practical rook endings, so I almost always go for a rook ending when I can, especially in drawn or lost position).

  • Analyze your own games, including your wins, to learn from your mistakes (This is one thing that brought Botvinnik his success in chess).

  • There may be a psychological barrier in reaching a certain rating.
Try Lichess ZEN mode, and do not focus too much on the rating.
Play only rated when you feel good and fit and motivated. Avoid playing rated versus lower rated.
When tired, or when you want to play against lower rated, then play casual.

Good luck, have fun !
