It seems somewhat derivative from the Book of Five Rings, especially in the notion of 'void'. 'Core' is also a rather curious translation of 'Heart/Mind'. (It's not 中心, right?!)

Yes! The author has said that he wanted to write a modern day 'Book of Five Rings'.
I was tossing up whether to go with Core or Heart, in the end I went with the former as I didn't want people to think of Heart as in it is emotion-based. But in some ways it makes more sense (heart of the position, heart of the matter). Sounds like you might be fluent in Japanese?
