2026 Spring Marathon (time control: hippoBullet 2 0) played on 18 april 2026

When I started the tournament was already going on for about 7 hours. At that moment Gakolchess765 was in the lead but the margin was not much. After a couple of hours GlasnostPerestroika took over. He extended his lead and quite some hours before the ending time it was clear he was going to win the tournament!
There is a lot of new stats/stuff in this blog! Mostly thanks to suggestions made by people on the forum!

Longest time spent playing

The most played games does not necessarily mean the longest time playing. There are some reasons for this:

your berserk percentage has a major impact
a lot of short games mean less playing time
also Arena strategy has impact. For example: (some) people quickly resign a worse position to start a new game (and they might be right from a marathon score point of view)

There are also some factors which are (unfortunately) not part of the calculated playing time:

the waiting time to get paired
the time after the last move (this is not recorded in the game notation)

To calculate the longest time spent playing I add all the actual move times. Note that this is different than the time Lichess shows for the max time spent playing (longest streak). In general the streak time Lichess shows is longer than the actual playing time

The marathon gives a nice opportunity to play against GM/IM's. Usually they will beat you but sometimes, sometimes they make a big mistake or you are able to surprise them and score a victory!

Shortest games, ended by checkmate

If we show the longest games then we are also interested in the shortest games. The shortest games ended by checkmate are usually caused by completely missing a mating threat or by a bad pre-move. Selection criteria are: both players have >2400 rating and a maximum length of 15 moves.
