Back Rank
The row where the major pieces start the game.
For White: 1st rank
For Black: 8th rank
Back-Rank Mate
A checkmate on the back rank when escape squares are blocked by your own pawns.
Bad Bishop
A bishop blocked by its own pawns.
Battery
Two or more pieces lined up together to attack.
Example:
Queen and rook on the same file.
Beginner
A new chess player still learning the basics.
Berserk
In arena tournaments, cutting your own time in half for extra points if you win.
Best Move
The strongest move in a position according to analysis.
Bid for the Center
Trying to control the central squares.
Bind
A position that limits the opponent’s movement.
Bishop Pair
Having both bishops, often considered an advantage.
Bishop Sacrifice
Giving up a bishop for tactical or attacking reasons.
Blindfold Chess
Playing chess without seeing the board.
Blitz
A fast chess format, usually 3–5 minutes per player.
Blunder
A very bad move that loses material or position.
Book Move
A move known from opening theory.
Bot
A computer program that plays chess.
Breakthrough
A tactical pawn sacrifice to create a passed pawn or attack.
Brilliant Move
A powerful and surprising move, often involving sacrifice.
Bronstein Delay
A time control system where a small amount of time is added after each move.
Bullet
An ultra-fast chess format, usually under 3 minutes.
Bust
To completely refute an opening or idea.
Bughouse
A chess variant played with partners where captured pieces can be dropped back onto the board.
Building a Fortress
Creating a defensive setup the opponent cannot break through.
Blockade
Stopping a pawn from advancing.
Benoni Structure
A pawn structure common in dynamic positions.
Between Move (Zwischenzug)
A surprising move played before the expected move.
Bishop Endgame
An endgame involving bishops.
Bound Piece
A piece tied to defending something important.
