1. Why knowing some basic endgames is important

Almost everyone below the 1000 level has experienced the terrible feeling of being in the lead an entire game and then getting to the endgame and throwing it all away into a draw or even worse a loss. Understanding these basic endgames can prevent that from happening. there are many different endgames you can learn, but the most important endgames for beginners to know are, the king and queen vs. king, king and rook vs king, and king and pawn vs king.

King and Queen vs King

This endgame is one of the easiest to learn, but is nevertheless crucial to endgame understanding. The easiest method (as demonstrated in the board below) is to move the queen a knight's space away from the king, and then to mirror the king's moves until he has only 2 moves left.
